Abstracting from Nature
Dates:
- Sunday & Monday, September 14 & 15, 2008, 10-5 (1 hour for
lunch)
Description: Working with sets of visual opposites,
participants develop a small piece using the elements as inspiration.
Principles of design and composition are discussed and applied as each
person develops their own vision. This workshop includes a variety of
approaches to working with fabric and surface embellishment- great for
the fiber artist who wants to create a unique design.

Supply List:
8 1/2 x 11 Sketch Pad - spiral bound is best.
Black felt tip pen e.g. Sharpie fine point
***Bring a small object from nature special to you. Example: rock, shell,
crystal, leaf, driftwood. It should be small enough to hold in your hand.

If you are sewing:
*Sewing machine - machine should be clean and in good working order. Zig-zag
foot or open toe appliqué foot, also free motion foot. (You must
be familiar with and comfortable with your machine. If it is new to you,
please bring the manual.)

Basic sewing supplies
Needles: 90/14 Embroidery or 90/14 Topstitching
Bobbin thread
Invisible thread - Superior, YLI or Sulky
1-2 yards lightweight Fusible Interfacing OR Sulky Totally Stable
Design wall - At least 45" x 45", fleece or flannel
*Decorative thread - a variety for embellishment
Fabric: More is always better. Batiks and hand dyes recommended.
Choose a variety of fabrics: batik, hand dyed, hand painted, interesting
prints. The colors should include some from nature. Be sure to have a
range of dark, medium and light tones.
Give yourself lots of choices. It's a good idea to bring that special
piece you are afraid to cut into
Scraps (hand sized or larger) can be fun to use and share..
***If you are not sewing: glue, fusibles, variety of papers, scraps, ephemera,
whatever is part of your chosen medium.
