Free Motion Quilting

Dates:
- Saturday, November 8, 2008, 2-5

Description: Develop your free motion quilting skills in the class. Practice working with filler designs and learn how to create your own! Experiment and learn how to work with different threads.

Instructor: Joyce Hartley

Class fee: $20

Kit fee: None

Level: Advanced Beginner - must know the basics of free motion

Supply List:
- clean sewing machine - MUST have free motion foot, MUST be able to drop feed dogs - please bring accessories, manual, extension table if you have one - bring extra bobbins, too
- thread stand if you need/have one
- sewing machine needles - quilting needles are a must, size 11 and/or 14; you may also want topstitch needles and/or metallic needles
- bring at least 5 sandwiches as follows: Use approx 18" squares (fat quarters are fine). You'll want to SEE your stitching (even though it won't all be pretty - these are PRACTICE!), so I recommend solid colors. White, black, muslin are all fine. You can use white on the top and black on the bottom to give yourself options, too. Batting - use Quilter's Dream Cotton or Poly Select weight, please. I recommend using 505 spray to prepare your sandwich: spray the back of one fabric, smooth the batting on it, spray the back of another fabric, then smooth it on top. Your basting is done! If you prefer to use safety pins, please use as few as possible because they get in the way. I will demonstrate using 505 spray and you will have time to baste your sandwiches in class if you choose to (although that will mean less time for sewing).
- threads - please bring an assortment of GOOD threads to experiment with. I would recommend one spool each of King Tut, Mirage, Invisifil, Poly Sheen, Mettler Silk Finish or Konfetti (all of which we sell at QA). Choose colors that will contrast with your fabric!
- plain paper and your preferred writing instrument (pen or pencil)
for doodling
- scissors
