Dates:
- Saturday, June 21, 2008, 10-1
- Saturday, September 27, 2008, 10-1
Description: Learn the basic procedures involved
in dyeing cotton using fiber reactive dyes and leave class with 24 handdyed
fat quarters. This technique is not especially messy or difficult, so
it seems almost magical! All dyes and chemicals are provided.
Instructor: Joyce
Hartley
Class fee: $20
Kit fee: $5 includes all dyes and chemicals
and most of the necessary equipment (measuring cups and spoons, buckets,
etc.).
Level: Beginner
Supply List:
- 24 fat quarters of PFD (prepared for
dyeing) fabric (we recommend kona cotton, pimatex, or tonga) prewashed
in synthrapol. You may want to consider using two different types of PFD
fabric, 12 FQ of each. These don't need to be folded or ironed after washing,
just stuffed in a bag is fine. We sell precut packages of 3 yards of PFD
fabric for approx 10% less than if you get it off the bolt. Two of these
packages is all you need. If you prefer softer, duller colors, buy at
least one package of unbleached PFD fabric.
- a set of 12 pint canning jars (try Ukrop's or Wal-Mart) *or* 12 gladware-type
containers with lids (minimum 16 oz )
- a box to carry the jars or containers in
- rubber gloves
- dust mask or handkerchief (these dyes and chemicals are less toxic than
Clorox, but I teach caution when working with them).
Note: Containers used for dyeing should NEVER be
used for food again. I will provide you with containers for an additional
fee of $5 (but let me know in advance that you need them).
