Customer Show and Tell

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 by MaryT

Are you ready to see some more terrific work from our customers?

Barbara M. made this wonderfully scrappy quilt with lots of curved piecing.

Barbara F. finished her pink quilt from Cheryl’s Fat Quarter Fonts class. She spelled out B-A-B-Y with fabric letters.

Amanda S. made another four-patch lightning quilt, after taking  Cheryl’s beginning quilting class.

A spectacular bag from Catherine E.

Ruth W. made this Lucky Stars quilt for her soon-to-be granddaughter, Reagan Elizabeth. Ruth fussy cut the fairies from a panel for her star centers. She thinks she is a beginning quilter but wanted to try something different. Since we had a Lucky Stars class scheduled, in case she needed help, Ruth decided to tackle it on her own. We can see that she didn’t need the class!

Mary B. sewed her daughters coordinating dresses that are very cool looking in our summer’s heat. Here is one of the dresses, and the other has the same fabrics in reverse!

Joyce C. made this scrappy jewel tones quilt. It looks like a great way to use up plenty of scraps.

Mary N. brought in this Night and Day quilt in oranges for her grandson.

Shirley W. had lots of fun with this Barnyard pattern from an old Quilter Magazine. Each barn is a good sized pocket for storing little stuffed animals. She did the quilting herself!

Linda G. made this lovely Baby Bargello quilt out of our pastel batiks.

Connie B. was about to remove an old wallpaper border in her bedroom, when she found that this fabric and pattern were a perfect match for it! The pattern was Blossom Bliss from Quilt Moments, but she made it without the kaleidoscopes; Valerie did the quilting.

The next black and white queen size one was made by Marguerite H.  for her nephew.

Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Customer Show & Tell

Monday, July 26th, 2010 by MaryT

It is time for some more customer show & tell! Enjoy the pictures and get inspired!

Todd D. discovered a way to make portrait quilts. He  imported a photo into an online mosaic maker which broke the photo down into tiles. Then he scanned in his fabrics, and printed out his design! Of course, it wasn’t quite as simple as that, but I hope you get the idea. He had 3,700+ pieces in each of these quilts, and he had to lay them out, numbered, just to keep them in order. The first is a portrait of Thomas Jefferson. When you view this up close it just looks like a black and white scrap quilt. When you step back, voila, there he is!

And, Todd didn’t stop at just one – his second is the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.

Within days of purchasing our new Oceania line from In the Beginning fabrics, Todd D. finished this big one.

Janet S. made  “Bling Thing” from the book “Let the Good Times Roll,” a book full of patterns using strip rolls. Here is her version.

Elizabeth G.’s mother won 30 fat quarters at our last year’s anniversary celebration. Here is a picture of her mom wearing the shawl she made with them. The second photo is a close-up view of the details.

Haxall W. has been busy since her beginning quilting class. She made this purple, pink and blue squares quilt.

and take a look at her creative use of leftover fabrics on the back:

Haxall also made a Four-Patch Lightning quilt. The yellows and greens are set off strikingly by the lemons on black.

MaryN. made this gift for her sister. Mary found fabrics to represent her sister and her children: fairies, the beach, etc.

Mary also finished a black/white and yellow/turquoise sampler quilt. Both have been sent off the longarm quilter.

Nina H. finished her daughter-in-law’s super queen size “Bento Box” with all the gorgeous blues and greens with black and whites. She got creative on the back when we didn’t have enough yardage of her favorite fabric. Look at what she did!

Ann N. made this “Sticks and Bricks” quilt for her 9-year old granddaughter who loves swimming. Her fabrics even look like pool colors!

Beverly S. took Cheryl’s class on Quilting with Less Stress on a Rinky Dink Machine. Then, she tackled quilting this big one and embellished away with buttons! She came in to purchase even more buttons!

Another view of the front so you can see the buttons, with a bit of the pretty back showing.

Pam S. used up a lot of her scraps on this fantastic quilt!

Deborah K. bought the last panel on the bolt of Aldo to Zippy fabric by P&B Textiles, and she didn’t even get the complete alphabet! But what a creative use of just a few letters in this bright children’s quilt.

Soundra B. got two big ones back from being quilted. One is the “Shoe Boxes” pattern from Atkinson Designs (by the way, everyone is pleased with this company’s easy-to-follow directions on all their patterns).

And here is Soundra’s other quilt – a crazy quilt based on a print of Asian ladies. She planned her craziness, by taking care that the ladies all faced in the same direction, although it is hard to see in the photo.

Susan B. made the “Gettin’ Ziggy With It” pattern found in the strip set book, “Stop, Drop, & Roll.” Her 15-year old daughter will be the lucky recipient!

Yet another group completed Chery’s 4-Patch Lightning beginning quilting class. Lots of variety in the color choices here! Olivia L, Cathy M., Amy T., Cynthia D., Patrick D., Stephanie V., and Barbi F.

June B. used Kwik Sew skirt pattern #3745 to make this terrific skirt in pretty soft palette batiks. It has a cute flounce at the bottom that is “calling my name!”

Thank you all for the inspiration!

Even more customer show and tell photos!

Brenda B. is a new quilter and here is her 9-Patch Table Runner from Laura’s class.

And here is picture of her sewing machine cover.

Linda P. made this cute bag and a matching notebook holder from the Nifty Notes Pattern by This and That.

Ruth B pieced the next 2 split rail fence quilts in colors for gifts. Her daughter Teresa B. did the long-arm quilting on them.

Here is a photo of our latest new quilters from Cheryl’s Four-Patch Lightning class. From left to right they are: Emily S, Amanda S, Joy C, Norrie T, Helen W, Frances S, and Heidi J.

Mary Catherine B. made two adorable baby dresses for her granddaughters. First is a photo of the two dresses, then a picture of Lily wearing hers. Mary used Kwik Sew pattern 3689. She brought both dresses on her visit to greet  newborn Lucy.

Cheryl S. made a  huge T-shirt quilt for a parent of a recent high school graduate.

Look at this big one made by Betty A. with our Odyssea strip sets and appliqued cute flowers. The pattern is Confetti Bloom by Rosalie Quinlan of Melly & Me.

Judy M. embroidered the centers on this Noah’s Ark quilt and Rebekkah quilted it.

The next one is a gift for Judy’s 80 year-old aunt, and I think she calls it the Sticks and Bricks pattern.

Nancy B. made this Quilt Poetry mandala called Finding Balance.

In the next photo, the bolt beside Nancy’s center is from Elizabeth’s Studio line, Kiev, and it will be the border. Nancy picked all the gorgeous colors for the center from this fabric.

Anna E. is at work completing Northcott’s Flower of the Month from a few years ago. She has these two pieces done, and will use them as mini quilts to change with the seasons.

The Slide Show pattern by Atkinson Designs has been a very popular pattern at QA and here are two spectacular and very different versions to inspire you:

Bonnie Tucker’s orange, red, and yellow batiks will be king-sized when she adds her last three rows.

Todd D’s version is dynamic in black and white prints.

Todd also brought in this terrific neutrals quilt made from the happy Hour pattern by Atkinson Designs.

And here is Todd’s own design of a square in a square using just two fabrics!

Stephanie C. made this delightful top for Gwendolyn using our Japanese super hero fabric with some black dots for contrast. The pattern, called Easy Empire-Waist Top, is in Amy Butler’s Little Stitches book.

Wendy W. took Cheryl’s bargello placemat class and took it a big step further to make the placemat into this quilt. She loves how the design shows off her letter, “W!”

Keep bringing in your work to show!

Lots of customer photos to share!

Pat W. took one of Cheryl’s beginning quilting classes and here is her finished lap quilt.

Catherine E. brought in several projects to show off. She is finishing up her first quilt which she actually made 2 years ago. She used the  Melons and Curves pattern but added some glitz with sparkly fabrics and made them a little wacky!  Unfortunately, the glitter made our photo look washed out. Catherine’s quilt back is just as gorgeous!

This little scottie dog quilt was another Catherine E. creation for the NICU.

Catherine’s heating pad cover is a gift for a friend.

Shannon C’s daughter picked out the fabrics for her own dress! Isn’t it cute?

Helen W. made this terrific outfit for her daughter — polka dot shorts and a colorful cupcake top – both trimmed with bright pink rick rack!

Next up is Laura H’s first quilt.

And here is Debbie S’s birdie sling bag.

Ron L. made this colorful batik quilt which he brought to Valerie for quilting,  and with some leftover fabrics he made coordinating pillows.

Mary B. made this  baby quilt as a gift for a 6-month old. She used our pre-cut strip sets with a rich chocolate colored solid. This was only her second quilt, and she did the terrific wavy line machine quilting on it, too!

Sandy B. was busy making end of the school year gifts for her girls’ teachers. The fish were all made by the children, then Sandy appliqued them to the background and added some seaweed. There are 2 colorways – one for each teacher in one of the classes.

Now look at Sandy’s terrific photo quilts for the two teachers of the busy bees class!

And here is a wonderful medallion quilt by Pam S.

Trude Y. made this bag with a crab on newspaper print fabric! She used Texture Magic on the crab’s body, stipple quilted it and let the steam iron give it that wonderful extra dimension, then added sew-on googly eyes. The crab block is from the March of the Crabs pattern in the book, Lots of Scraps: It’s Time to Quilt.

I hope you keep bringing in your work!

More wonderful customer show and tell pictures to share!

The First UU Quuilters have been busy. Kathleen V sent us these photos of one of their charity quilts; we have front and back views!

Jennifer H. hand pieced this bright modern take on Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern. There’s a close-up of one of her blocks where you can see Rebekkah R’s quilting design, too!

Diane E. brought in this Biscuit Quilt she made from a pattern she found in a library book! We have a side view, too, so you can see that each “biscuit” is 3-4″ tall!

The next beautiful batiks quilt was made by Kathy R.

Suzy B. needed a retirement gift for someone who will be spending lots of  free time at the beach. She made a beach bag with a bright sunshine on screen, a sunglasses case, and the zippered humbug bag. These items will be put together with other themed gifts including a sunshine beach towel and a radio. What a great idea, and a terrific sewing job!

The next quilt is a gift for Ada H’s little sister from the Big Brother Big Sister Program. Adriana picked out Michael Miller flower fairies for her 9th birthday quilt present. Terrific colors in the borders!

We seem to have a new prolific quilter at Quilting Adventures. Haxall W. took Cheryl’s beginning quilting class in November and she has completed 2 more quilts since then! Here is her Four-Patch Lightning quilt from the class.

Here are two more — one made from our “Kaffe Fasset and Friends” pastel strip sets, and another beauty in Key West inspired beachy fabrics.

Rosalie E. is ready to have her one block wonder quilted. It looks gorgeous!

Betty H. brought in her Slide Show quilt made from our Imperial Collection Asian fabrics, and quilted by Deb J. This photo doesn’t capture how beautiful it is- the gold got caught in the camera flash! Then, Betty took a class using her embroidery software and made this exquisite zippered pillow – with beads and tassels.

The Double 9-Patches on Point quilt is Elaine L’s second quilt from the book Piecing the Piece O’ Cake Way! Look at the great bright colors!

Keep bringing in your work! We love to share it.

More great customer work to show off!  :-)

Kathy T. shared this quilt made from Alex Anderson’s pattern “Hopscotch in Neutrals.” She made it just like the sample we had in the shop.

And here is Kathy’s other Autumn Leaves quilt from the Thangles pattern.

Melissa Y made this 9-patch quilt in oranges and greens for her baby-on-the-way!

Nancy W. won the Best in Show award at “Quilts on the Point” in West Point for this Dear Jane beauty with over 100 blocks and pieced triangles around the border. It has a scalloped border and binding!  Look at the close-up of her gorgeous prize ribbon, too!

The next photo shows flower pillows Carolyn D. made for her 5-year old granddaughter, Kelsey.

And a group photo from another successful beginning quilting class. This one is Laura’s Nine-Patch Table Runner class.

Customer Show and Tell

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 by MaryT

We have  more customer work to show off!  Suzy B. made this spools quilt in Nina’s beginning paper piecing class.

This enormous fall colors quilt got lost in our photo shuffle, and now we don’t know who made it. Please let us know who you are! We do remember that you told us you thought the fabrics were ugly, but look how beautiful they turned out in this quilt!

Scottie H. makes silk dog collars, especially for Great Danes!

Angela W. made a crown for Pierson’s first birthday and the #1 applique on his T-shirt.

Bobbie S. loves the Asian fabrics, and she is thrilled with the custom quilting work Deb J. did on her Asian Block of the Month.

Bobbie also finished this quilt called “Lazy Girl” from Gee’s Bend.

You’d never know by looking at it, but Marguerite H. used an Asian fabric to make this colorful One Block Wonder Encore quilt. Valerie S. did the quilting, then took the quilt to Hampton for her quilting booth display, so it traveled! Look at the depth in those 3-D cubes! Below her quilt is a photo of the fabric Marguerite used – the red print from Emperor’s Collection II.

This was Jacqueline W.’s first quilt! She made it as a present for her niece using fabrics from our Hush-a-Bye collection. She even appliqued “VCU” on it!

Mariette N. made this enormous beauty from fabrics she gathered in her travels. Guatemala, Kenya, Tanzania, Haiti, China, Indonesia, and the Philippines are just some of the locations! Look at her hand embroidery on the top in lots of pretty colors!

Kamila B. loves to alter T-shirts to turn them into dresses, and even pleated  pink ribbon for the bottom. Isn’t Meg adorable in the Hippie Chicks bright fabric?

Whooo? Whooo? Who covered a chair with Alexander Henry’s “It’s a Hoot” fabric? I did, and coordinated chocolate brown cording for it, too!

Pretty things to see!

Lila L.’s Easter dresses turned out great!  The pattern was Portabellopixie, “Claire,” in sizes 3 and 7.  So precious!  Although you can’t see them, they have great apron string bows in the back and she even did French seams on the size 7. And here are the girls wearing them for their Egg Hunt!

We’ve had another successful Four-Patch Lightning beginning quilting class with Cheryl. Displaying their first quilts from left to right are Heather L, Kim R, Laurie R, Monet W, Jacqueline C.,  Barbi F, and Wanda G.

Paula R. made this terrific pink and green quilt.

And Sally S. had fun using up little scraps to make this miniature quilt. It is only 9″ x 10″ big!

Sarah C. just got this queen-size beauty back from the long-arm quilter! Sarah took Laura’s class on the Stack and Whack LeMoyne Star, and her fabric was Rainbow Gardens by Prints Charming.

Backy W. has been busy making bags. She made up her own pattern for a messenger bag that has all kinds of pockets inside and out, as well as a short side zipper for easy access! The traveling gnome fabric is a perfect choice for her upcoming trip to San Francisco.

Outside of bag                   Side unzipped

Another Becky W. tote bag – this one padded to handle a laptop, and has a matching wallet, too! She used the retro line called the Sew It Book.

It is great to see all of your work!

More great customer photos!

The first one is from another successful beginning quilting class! This group participated in Cheryl’s class where they learned how to make the Four-Patch Lightning quilt from start to finish in 4 days. Coni McC., Cathy R., Courtney T., Karen F., and Jennifer S. are proudly displaying their first quilts, and they all look different. Cheryl said they really had fun doing this “intensive” plan, and it felt like they were at camp!

Barbara C. had fun in our Miniatures in Minutes class. Here is her bright and cheerful completed mini quilt.

Heather L. finished her Super Simple Strips quilt from Laura’s class. She is hooked on quilting now, and is taking the Lucky Stars class!

Pat O. just had to order the kit for “Creme Brulee” when she saw it in a magazine, because she loved the delicate colors.

Catherine E’s large tote bag needed 2 photos! The front and back are like two different “quilts” and the clear handle is filled with tiny beach glass and shells.

Wendy B. tried a new technique from Quilting Arts – she took a photo of her cat, Tomoko, posterized it, and reproduced it in shades of blue fabrics.

And one more I am sneaking in, just because I can! Here is my San Marco quilt from a class I took with Norah McMeeking, author of Bella Bella Quilts, when she came to Fredericksburg. I hope the 3-D effect shows up!

Keep bringing in your work! We love to see it!
