One of our customers, Vivian, sent me pictures of her finished project from last summer’s class with Karen Eckmeier:

So, who would like for me to invite Karen back to teach again?  :-)

Cure by Design quilt

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007 by Joyce

I’m working on a quilt for the American Cancer Society’s Cure by Design fashion show this summer. The quilt will be used as a backdrop for the runway; it will be 10.5′ x 6′ when it’s finished, and they plan to auction it off to raise money for cancer research. The background is blocks that are crazy pieced from all kinds of fabric, not just cottons – silks, rayons, “fabrics of undeterminate origin” – and there will be a large applique design in white silk dupioni. We had a PJ party at the shop last month where volunteers sewed blocks for the quilt. By the end of the evening there were at least 10 finished blocks and several more in progress. I brought the whole lot home and worked on it over the weekend. My design wall at home isn’t big enough, so the blocks are pinned up as overlapping, my studio isn’t big enough to get a clear shot without major furniture moving, and the flash kind of washed out the colors (it’s really much richer than it looks here), but here it is:

Pills and Pillows Update

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007 by Joyce

Our pills and pillows event last month was very successful!  We collected 30 bed pillows, and over 70 packages/bottles of over the counter medications, all for the YWCA Women and Children’s Shelter.  Then QA staff picked out fabric for pillowcases, and with a dedicated crew of volunteers, we made 30 custom pillowcases to go with the pillows.  We also had several quilts that had been finished during the last few Quilts for Richmond workdays.

Here’s a picture of some of the goodies – we completely filled the back and back seats of a Suburban with all our donations:

Thank you to all of our generous customers who helped us make this happen!
