Free Motion Thread Play

Description: Students will explore several free-motion machine thread painting techniques. They will learn when to "sketch" directly on the fabric and when to create appliqués separately in a hoop. They will learn how to blend colors and how to select appropriate fabrics, threads, needles, and stabilizers. This is a class on learning techniques rather than completing a project. Ideas for the application of these techniques will be discussed. The class requires a sewing machine that allows you to disengage the feed dogs and has enough space to insert a narrow hoop under the needle. Both straight and zigzag stitches will be demonstrated but the majority of the sewing will be straight stitching. Students must be familiar with their sewing machines!
