Paper piecing is an easy and methodical technique that results in complex blocks! Cartwheels from Freshly Pieced Patterns is a fun pattern and all you need to know is how to sew on a line. No points to match and your choice of sizes to sew. This class will start with the basics of paper piecing quilt blocks. You will just be sewing a few blocks in class but can continue at home for a larger size quilt if you choose. A class kit will include the pattern and a few blocks printed on foundation paper.
-Cartwheels pattern (We will have the pattern printed on Foundation Piecing Paper, enough for several blocks.)
-Sewing machine in working order with the manual
-Straight stitch AND 1/4" foot for your machine (a 1/4" foot without a "blade" kind of guide)
-New 70/10 Microtex machine needle
-Neutral 50 weight 100% cotton thread
-Regular sewing supplies - scissors, paper scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc.
-Rotary cutter with a new blade, mat, and ruler at least 6" x 12"
-Add-a-Quarter ruler - recommend 12" or longer and a wide one is better.
Fabric - see back of pattern for yardage. You do not have to follow the colors of the quilt, you can pick your own colorways.
DO NOT SKIMP WHEN CUTTING FOR PAPER PIECING. PLEASE PRECUT ALL STRIPS 3 1/2" WIDE. PATTERN GIVES DIFFERENT WIDTHS. YOU MAY WANT TO ADD 1/4" TO 1/2" TO LENGTH OF STRIPS TOO.
As we will be focusing on the paper piecing technique in class, sashing, border, backing, batting, and binding are not needed during class.
