Beginning Sewing 102; Tote Bag
Beginning to Sew, Part 2 This class is for new sewers who are reasonably confident with threading and operating their sewing machine, have practiced sewing seams with consistent seam allowances, and are ready to take on a more complicated project. In this class, we’ll make a lined tote bag with handles, a flat bottom and an interior pocket. We’ll review tips for cutting fabric accurately, using fusible interfacing, stitching accurate seams, topstitching and some hand stitching. The project pattern will be supplied in class. The finished tote bag will by 10”x15”x5” Prior to class, please iron the cotton fabrics.
Supplies required for class:
-5/8 yd. Cotton or cotton canvas fabric for bag body and handles
-1/4 yd. contrasting/coordinating fabric for bag band
-3/4 yd. Cotton fabric for lining
-1 ¼ yd. 20-22” wide heavyweight fusible interfacing
-Good quality 50 wt thread, color coordinated with your fabrics
-Sewing machine in good working condition (bring the manual)-
-new universal or microtex needle, size 70 or 80
Sewing tools, e.g., scissors, sewing pins, small ruler/seam gauge, marking tool, seam ripper Rotary cutter Ruler, 24” long x 6-8” wide Hand sewing needle
In consideration of other students and employees with allergies, please limit your use of scented personal products when attending one of our classes.
If your class calls for a book or pattern, each student needs their own copy of that book or pattern. Under federal copyright law, books and patterns may not be shared.
If your class requires a sewing machine, please be sure that you are familiar with its operation, it is in good working order, has been serviced recently, and bring your manual along to class just in case!
We do not allow children under the age of 12 in our classes without the consent of the teacher and the shop owner.
Only the person who is enrolled and paid for the class may be in the classroom during class time. Out of consideration for the teacher and the other students, please do not bring children, guests, or friends to class with you.
Cancellation policy: If the class minimum is not met within seven days prior to the class, it may be cancelled and you will be notified and will receive a full refund. Please keep this possibility in mind when you purchase supplies for your class. No refunds of class fees will be given if student cancels within the one week prior to class.
Note: 16-17 year olds must have parent permission, but class will be free.
