English Paper Piecing (EPP)

English Paper Piecing is a method of quilting done entirely by hand, making it a great project for quilting on the go. Learn everything you need to get started in our new EPP class.  Please note that this is not Foundation Paper Piecing.

We will show you how to use the materials you will need for English paper piecing, including fabric, a hand-sewing needle and thread, paper shapes and plastic templates.

This class will cover the most common shape used when doing English paper piecing, the 1” hexagon.

You will learn how to baste your fabric onto the paper using both a glue method and a hand-sewing method. Once you learn how to baste your fabric shapes, you will be ready to stitch your pieces together to make a Hexie Mug Rug in class.

We will not be using a sewing machine.

Supplies needed:

  • Fabric scraps that can be cut into 2-1/2” squares or larger, OR charm packs, jelly rolls and mini charm packs work well, as do fabric scraps.  We will need 7 pieces for the mug rug, but bring as many as you'd like for practice.
  • A package of 1” EPP paper hexagon pieces.
  • Hand sewing needles such as milliners or embroidery
  • Thread – 60 wt polyester preferred.
  • Glue stick
  • Fabric clips such as Clover clips or small binding clips
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Small quilting ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Small cutting mat
  • Marking pencil
  • A piece of felt at least 6” square. This will be the mug rug backing.
  • Fabric glue

Optional, but recommended:

  • 1” hexagon acrylic template that includes a seam allowance.  Not needed if you are using a mini charm pack.
  • Magnetic Needle minder
  • Thimble

Class Policies:

If your class starts at the same time that we open, we will let you into the shop ten minutes before class time.

In consideration of other students and employees with allergies, please limit your use of scented personal products when attending one of our classes.

If your class calls for a book or pattern, each student needs their own copy of that book or pattern. Under federal copyright law, books and patterns may not be shared.

If your class requires a sewing machine, please be sure that you are familiar with its operation, it is in good working order, has been serviced recently, and bring your manual along to class just in case!

We do not allow children under the age of 18 in our classes without the consent of the teacher and the shop owner. No pets.

Only the person who is enrolled and paid for the class may be in the classroom during class time. Out of consideration for the teacher and the other students, please do not bring children, guests, or friends to class with you.

Cancellation policy: If the class minimum is not met within seven days prior to the class, it may be cancelled and you will be notified and will receive a full refund. Please keep this possibility in mind when you purchase supplies for your class. No refunds of class fees will be given if student cancels within the one week prior to class.
