A Quilter's 5k for Veterans Day

 A Quilter's 5k for Veterans Day

This Thursday, November 11th, is Veterans Day.  According to Wikipedia, Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, who are people who have served in the United States Armed Forces (that were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable).  It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.  Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.  At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

What can you do to honor this day?  Take 5!

It’s time to lace up those running or walking shoes, or set up your sewing machine and iron, to Run, Walk, or Block for a great cause...the Quilts of Valor Foundation is running their annual special event! (virtual this year)  From Nov 1st through 11th, this event will raise essential funds to help advance the mission of the Foundation “to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”  Since this is a VIRTUAL race/event, you have the flexibility to participate in a safe manner that is convenient for you.

The Take 5 concept allows you to scale up or down, as well as get creative!

~ run or walk 5 miles

~ walk the dog 5 blocks
~ sew 5 quilt blocks
~ sew blocks for 5 hours
~ sew blocks with a “5-chocolates reward”

Have FUN with it!

Learn more about the event here:

NOTE: official registration is closed but you can still participate on your own.  Any blocks or sewing you complete can be dropped off at QA for the Richmond chapter of Quilts of Valor.  They will be incorporated into a quilt for a veteran.
