June 14th is Flag Day. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national flag day. Why June 14th? Well, in 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the design of a national flag on June 14th. Harry Truman signed legislation from Congress into law in 1949.
It is believed that Francis Hopkinson designed the first flag, Great Seal, and coin of the United States. There have been 27 official versions of our flag. The arrangement of the stars was up to the flag maker to begin with. In 1912, President Taft standardized the newest flag's stars into six rows of eight stars nationally. The change in the flag for adding Alaska and Hawaii was standardized for the 49 and 50 stars too.
